Books in Use at the O'Connor Music Studio
Some books will be lent at no cost to students. Supplemental books (Technic, Fun, Recital, Duet, etc.) may be rented for as long as necessary for $1.00 each. Students may also borrow temporary use books such as Christmas, Festival and extra practice books at no extra charge.
If rented or loaned books are written in by the student or other family members, lost or damaged beyond future use, the student will be responsible for replacement.
In addition to the main "method book", several books to be written in must be purchased since they cannot be reused. These will help build the skills that the student carries away for a lifetime of music enjoyment.
When a student begins reading music on the staff, a FUNdamentals of Music book will be assigned. This helps with many aspects of music, including singing and playing other instruments.
The Practice and Progress Notebook has a great deal of valuable information in it. There is a practice agreement on page 4 which will help establish goals in your family. Please fill it out as soon as possible.

Piano Camp,
Sessions of Musical Activities
by June C. Montgomery
Introducing the Primer Level of the successful Piano Camp series. It is designed
for students who have had no piano study. Having a piano camp for students before
they begin lessons is an excellent way to give students a "head start" in learning some
of the basic concepts taught in the first months of beginning lessons. The Primer
Level book can be a tool for parents, teachers and students to evaluate the student's
interest in music and to determine whether or not to continue lessons.
This unique, exciting series provides all of the materials you will need to create piano
camps for students in a variety of levels from early elementary to early intermediate.
They include sections on "How to Schedule Piano Camps" and give a sample
schedule for a typical two-hour session. Piano Camp, Book 1 reviews all of the
concepts in Lesson Book, Level 1A of Alfred's Basic Piano Library. Book 2

Group Piano Course
Providing a comprehensive musicianship curriculum
for students studying in groups.
Alfred's Basic Group Piano Course was
specifically developed for young students beginning
study in a group, but also can be used with those
who receive monthly group lessons in conjunction
with private lessons. This course, which contains
four books, is the first of its kind.
Each book is divided into units that present new concepts, and is
colorfully illustrated with delightful characters. Each concept is
reinforced with exercises in theory, composition, ear training, sight
reading, solo repertoire, technique and more. The student needs only
one book to study all of these areas.
The easy-to-teach learning sequence, stimulating music, and exciting
group activities make learning enjoyable. Teachers love the flexibility
that the course provides for lesson planning.
The Teacher's Handbook is an invaluable tool for planning lessons
and charting students' development. It contains suggested lesson
plans, assignments and teaching tips for each unit. The beginning
pages include useful information on group teaching, followed by a
curriculum easily adaptable to the particular needs of individual
groups.
Compact discs and General MIDI disks complete with ear training
exercises also are available to enrich the learning process. To
further reinforce the concepts introduced in
the course, Alfred has created the exciting
board game, Musical Adventures.
Designed specifically for use with Alfred's
Basic Group Piano Course, the game also
may be used with other methods and by
those studying instruments other than piano.
Students learn about music theory, answer questions and identify
concepts, while following an adventure trail through various
mysterious lands.
Alfred's Chord Approach
Dazzling performances -- for students age 10 and
up.
When young adolescents begin their journey
into the world of music, they bring some very
unique challenges along with them. They
want to play music that's sparkling and
fresh-sounding, with harmonies and
arrangements that sound more advanced than
they really are.
They also want to impress their families and friends, yet need
to play music that is less physically demanding than most adult
piano methods. Alfred's Basic Chord Approach provides a
magnificient musical selection that will capture your students'
youthful exuberance while providing a solid lesson structure.
The Chord Approach series is a
highly-effective method of instruction in two
levels that introduces chord playing faster
than in the regular Alfred's Basic Piano
Library series. Students begin playing triads in
Level 1, rather than waiting until later levels.
By combining an eclectic reading approach
with chord playing, students are able to enjoy playing fuller and
more involved pieces much faster.
Alfred's Basic Chord Approach Levels 1 and 2 include:
- Lesson Book
- Theory Book
- Solo Book
- Christmas Book
- Duet Book
- Technic Book
At the completion of Level 2, the student will be ready to go directly into Level 3 of Alfred's Basic Piano Library.
Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course
Magnificent mastery -- for teenage and adult
beginners.
Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course is the most
popular of all adult courses because it
provides a wide variety of musical selections
especially chosen to please adult students.
The Lesson Books teach chords for both
hands so students can play more than single
note melodies and contain such outstanding
pieces as "The Entertainer," "Scarborough
Fair," "Greensleeves" and "Amazing Grace."
Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course, Books 13, thoroughly
covers the circle of fifths, chord inversions, chord progressions,
major and minor scales and much more!
The Theory Books reinforce every concept and principle
introduced in the Lesson Books, and important tips are included
that make learning chord progressions even easier!
The Pop Song Books contain well-known popular songs that
are arranged in order of difficulty to provide technical
advancement and a sense of accomplishment. The Finger
Aerobics Book contains superb exercises that develop strength,
flexibility and agility of each finger. In addition, there are Sacred
Books, All-Time Favorites Books, Duet Books, Christmas
Books, a Country Book, an Ear Training Book, a Notespeller
Book, a Sight Reading book, Flash Cards and Computer
Software for enjoyment and reinforcement.

4. The Adult Jazz/Rock Course is perfect for teens and
adults, and correlates with Level 1 of Alfred's Basic
Adult Piano Course. No prior experience with
improvising or teaching jazz and rock music is
necessary!
In the Jazz/Rock Course, improvisation is introduced
and structured in a way to make it possible for
everyone to succeed. It is especially helpful to teachers
who have had limited or no experience with
improvising themselves. Carefully planned
improvisation opportunities throughout the method give
teachers and students guidelines on how to approach
each concept. Additional improvisation and repertoire
